Hallyu: The Korean Wave

The Hallyu exhibit at the V&A offered a small insight into various aspects of South Korean popular culture, including cinema, drama, music, fandom, beauty, and fashion, the exhibit took around an hour/hour and a half to get through.

Hallyu, the Korean Wave became popular in late 1990 but it wasn't till mind 2000 that it gained global traction, It is a vibrant and dynamic phenomenon that has had a huge impact on the global creative industries. Hallyu has gained immense popularity and has influenced audiences worldwide, making it a necessary cultural export for South Korea.

The V&A collaborated with K-pop style & visual director Gee Eun who is known for styling BLACKPINK and BIGBANG and Style director Balkon whose work includes bands like BTS and NTC for its K-pop fashion and style section of the exhibition. Outfits worn by Aespa in their "next leave" music video and British punk fashion-inspired designs that were worn by ATEEZ in their "Fireworks" were among the pieces on display.

Also on display were traditional costumes and props such as the 갓 (Gat) a traditional hat worn in the popular drama Kingdom which was set in the Joseon Dynasty period. As well as the 한복 (Hanbok) worn in Love in the Moonlight. The 한복 has a long history that can be traced back thousands of years. It reflects the aesthetics and social values of the various dynasties and periods in Korean history.
